I have been volunteering at the breakfast club at Holy Cross RC Primary School for a short time now. In the beginning, I wasn’t sure what to expect. How would the students react to me? What will I be doing with them? I had one goal…begin to build a relationship with the students. On the first day, I sat down with a group of girls who were drawing pictures. It seemed a logical place to start because I could strike up a conversation about their drawings. They seemed unsure of me, but were curious. Who was I and what was I doing there? After a while, I moved to another table where a “serious” chess match was going on. Since I have no idea how to play chess, I watched with intent. While sitting there, I was approached by a few older students. We struck up a conversation and they were intrigued to learn more about me. The feeling was mutual. The beginnings of a relationship began to bloom and continue to grow each week.
I feel very blessed to be able to spend two mornings each week interacting with and being a positive influence in the students’ lives. While I hope they are learning from me, I know in the end I will be the one that learns more from them.

Visiting the children was a wonderful experience, they are enthusiastic and hungry for new experiences. I have spent time teaching a few chess, others how to do simple origami, and in every case we have had a great time. The staff are inviting and helpful. There is truly a ‘home away from home’ feel, students and staff alike welcomed me into their community. I look forward to many more mornings with them, and I hope to inspire the students to greater heights.
